The island of Burano, between history and legend

The history of the island of Burano Venice has its roots in the distant past of the origins of the city of Venice, when the population of Altino fled because of barbarian raids within the Lagoon on the neighboring islets, to which it gave its name. The word Burano comes from the word Bora, that cold and strong wind that is very often heard blowing in the Lagoon during the winter months (very famous in Trieste).

The houses currently have garish plasterwork different from one another to mark the end of one property and the beginning of another. They are low buildings of one or two stories with kitchens and services on the ground floor and the rooms on the second floor.

Legend has it that the colors of the houses were so garish so that fishermen, on their way home, could recognize their dwelling amidst the fog or caìgo as we say here, which in autumn and winter descends in dense banks over the entire Lagoon and hinterland... who knows if this is the right explanation! The fact remains that the beauty and cheerfulness of these buildings are the hallmark of this island, much to the delight of photographers and visitors who stop at every step to take postcard-perfect photos!

Burano - the most famous lace in the world

In Burano lace can be found in almost every store. Surely this is a typical and original souvenir to keep if you are a lover of handmade art. This craftsmanship has its roots in the distant past: a craft tradition handed down from mother to daughter for generations since the early 16th century.

The women of Burano became the most skilled, true masters of air stitch. A technique so delicate and light that it was within the reach only of nobles, the Doge and royal courts throughout Europe. Until the nineteenth century, this workmanship brought such luster and riches to this small island in the Lagoon that it lifted the local economy based exclusively on agriculture and fishing.

For its enormous human and historical value, visit the Lace Museum in Galuppi Square and pause to observe this elegant and airy craftsmanship that is the result of this island's female industriousness.

Burano Venice and the other islands of the Lagoon: how to visit them?

Visiting Burano Venezia does not take much time but the experience is unforgettable and to be observed with attentive eyes to every detail. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the islands of Venice and its Lagoon, a unique experience to discover this natural environment in a hilarious and entertaining way aboard a boat with guides who will explain all the secrets of the Lagoon. The tour of Burano is usually done in combination with that of Murano and Torcello.

You can choose half-day tours, 4 1/2 hours, or full-day tours, 6 1/2 hours. Departures are either from San Marco or Piazzale Roma. We also have departures from Cavallino and Punta Sabbioni in the high season from April to September.

We recommend the longer tours because it is always good to take your time to totally immerse yourself in this amphibious atmosphere, to understand its slow rhythms, to see seabirds, fishing and rowing boats.

On the other hand, if your time is counted, we offer shorter trips. You can also choose to board an electric boat, which is much more environmentally friendly, or a traditional lagoon boat, such as the bragozzo, to make your group trip even more authentic and organize an ad hoc itinerary, starting from Venice, Fusina, the tronchetto, San Giobbe. Ask us! We are experts on the islands!

Burano -Venice how to get there? Means of transportation

Do you want to know how to get to Burano by the right means of transportation? If you have not booked a boat trip for your island tour, then you can get to Burano Venice by ACTV waterbus.

To get to Burano you have to take line 12, which connects the islands of Murano Burano and Torcello from Venice's Fondamente Nove, the journey is about 45 minutes long-a small cruise that is very crowded during the summer months. You may find yourself waiting for vaporetti and unable to get in because of too many people. Be careful because the ticket is valid for 75 minutes (with changes you may exceed the time and have to obliterate twice) for €7.50 per person.

So a good choice may be to buy the 24H ticket that costs €20 per person or the €30 ticket for 48 hours. That way you can get on and off the vaporettos as many times as you want! For those coming or going to Punta Sabbioni just take lines 12 or 14. Finally for Marco Polo airport there are no direct connections, you have to go back to Murano or Fondamente Nove with line 12 and here take the Alilaguna direct.
